At a watch fair stuffed with watches so costly so delicate that you would be afraid to wear them out of the home, it is refreshing to see something a little more rugged on the racks. This year at Baselworld 2015, Seattle bag manufacturer Filson announced it was getting into the watch game for the very first time with a series of 25 timepieces. Even better, each has been designed by the group in Detroit-based watchmaker Shinola (and powered by Shinola’s Argonite moves ) – collaborations don’t come much more American than that.
And considering it’s an entirely new stadium for Filson, it’s surely a strong beginning – no doubt aided by Shinola’s eye for crafting slick, but not flashy, timepieces. There are just two case styles available: the 44mm Journeyman (accessible as both a GMT watches plus a chronograph, both with a world-timer attribute ) and also the 43mm Mackinaw (available in the two three-hand and chronograph versions). Better yet, many utilize Filson’s trademark materials that you may recognise from the brand’s famous bags for their straps, such as bridle leather and dry tin cloth, in addition to others in using nylon Nato, rubber, and Horween leather.
Have a peek at every version from the lineup here, and watch out (no pun intended) for the Journeyman 2 with a rubber strap fashions which will be coming next month.
