TAG Heuer Takes Us Inside How a Chronograph Works

What are oscillating pinions and column wheels and how do they work together in a chronograph watch?

Edouard Heuer — founder of the watch company known today as TAG Heuer — was the inventor of the oscillating pinion. This component is key in the construction of many chronograph movements as it is the component that lies at the center of the system for the starting and stopping of the chronograph.

In this exclusive video, we will sit with one of the movement designers of this year’s TAG Heuer 01 chronograph at TAG Heuer’s headquarters in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He will show us how chronographs start and stop, leading us through the chain of events from the moment the chronograph start button is pushed, through the turning of the column wheel, to the connecting rockers and, finally, to the change of position of the oscillating pinion.

IBG Worldwide is a video platform dedicated to demonstrating how the finest timepieces are really made. It hosts our documentaries that educate collectors in the many techniques used in the creation of sophisticated mechanical watches. This is an English-language video channel that no TAG Heuer individual watch brand could create by itself.
