When my interest in mechanical chronographs started somewhere in the late 1990’s, the IWC Pilot Chronograph was quickly identified by myself as one of the nicer chronographs on the market (for me). At the time, the watch came either on a leather strap or on the nicely finished stainless steel bracelet. IWC used a nicely finished ETA/Valjoux 7750 work-horse movement for that model and the dial had that typical 7750 lay-out, sub dials on 12, 9 and 6 o’clock. It was their 39mm reference 3706 model, long-time out of production now. It was followed-up by a 42mm version (reference 3717) with small red seconds hand on 9 o’clock. Today it is a 43mm version (reference 3777) with the typical 3 date aperture frame on 3 o’clock but still very close to its pre-decessors. IWC decided to expand their collection of IWC Pilot Chronograph watches at some point, with special series like the Spitfire edition, Le Petit Prince edition, Antoine de Saint Exupéry edition and the watch I am reviewing today for you, the Top Gun with ceramic case. There are actually two ceramic Top Gun models, this one in full black as well as the Miramar edition with its anthracite dial and more ‘military’ look.

Previewing IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph
New for 2016, IWC is launching a world time watch which, according to the brand, is the first watch that allows the wearer to set a second time zone along with hour and date with a single move. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph is a new model joining the ranks of a refreshed pilot’s watch line being unveiled by IWC at SIHH 2016 which are designed to evoke the older Pilot’s Watches from around the WWII period .
After IWC’s purchase of Vogard’s patent on their TimeZoner watch (review here) in late 2014, we are now seeing their world time watch with the IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner chronograph (Ref. IW395001). A rotating bezel allows the wearer to easily change timezones, and we assume the feature will find a lot more mainstream success with IWC’s marketing machine behind it. It’s also important to note that this watch also borrows the IWC Aquatimer’s SafeDrive rotating bezel. What this means is that there’s a quasi-internal bezel that is controlled by moving the outer bezel. Functionally, this translates to the inner bezel revolving the opposite direction as the outer bezel. What this results in is the ability to show a new timezone and time of day with a turn of the bezel.
Previewing IWC Aquatimer Watches In Three New Designs 2016
2015 has drawn to a close, which it means that we can turn our eyes towards the watches that are being released for 2016. For the new year, IWC is extending their Aquatimer lineup which had a major overhaul back in 2014 (hands-on with those here). Obviously, these do not include any major or radical design changes, but IWC figured some fresh new looks were worth it. While new watches often will pull inspiration from (or pay homage to) places, people, or past models, the new IWC Aquatimer models manage to cover all three of those bases.
Previewing IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Edition
As part of the opening of the new Rodeo Drive store, IWC of course launched a limited edition watch for the occasion with the reference IW502003 IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Boutique Rodeo Drive. Limited to 250 pieces, this is one of those limited edition models I think fans of the brand should take notice of given the design as well as the case. The last ceramic-cased IWC Big Pilot’s Watch I reviewed was this Top Gun version here. Things have changed a bit, and while the movement remains the same in-house caliber 5111, the new watch is a lot more wearable.
Pilot’s Watch Collection: IWC Big Pilot Watch
There are some watches that have so much history and so many variations in their collections that it would be a horological disservice to attempt to cover every facet of them within one article. The Omega Speedmaster, Cartier Tank, and TAG Heuer Carrera are three such collections that come to mind, but another prime example is the IWC Pilot’s Watch. A few weeks ago, we compared vintage and modern variations of the iconic Mark XVII, but this week we come to an equally popular and integral part of the larger Pilot’s Watch collection: the IWC Big Pilot.
