Avalon (part-way between Melbourne and Geelong) will become one of the busiest air spaces in the country in March. The normally sleepy airport will be transformed when state-of-the-art planes including the gigantic RAF Atlas airlifter and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (in its first Australian sighting), will thunder down from the skies. The reason, of course, is the bi-annual Avalon Airshow, the world’s third largest aviation trade show, and if you’re in the market for a private jet or just looking to stock up on heat-seeking missiles, no doubt it’s already in the diary. Bronze beauty - the Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition

From the bright and shiny press pics, to the patinated reality, the bronze Carl Brashear from Oris is one of the buzziest watches released this year.

We had thought, towards late 2015, that the watch world had reached peak bronze. The uncommon material, pioneered by Panerai and Anonimo seemed to be everywhere – from dive watches to pilots. Well, we got that one wrong. The bronze age continues unabated, with two premier dive watch releases: the bronze evolution of Tudor’s Black Bay, and this limited edition take on the Divers Sixty-Five, the Carl Brashear Limited Edition. Both are variations on a theme – a 40-odd-millimetre diver with a heritage twist. But for all the similarities it’s remarkable how different these two pieces look – the Tudor is brawny, while the Oris is beautiful. Inspired by the story of Carl Brashear, the US naval diver famously portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jnr in Men of Honor, this is a textbook example of what a well-done limited edition looks like. read more

Previewing Oris Diver Sixty-Five Now Offered with New Bracelet

Following up on its previous models with tropical and textile straps, Oris is now also offering a riveted bracelet option for its vintage-inspired dive watch, the Oris Diver Sixty-Five (see review here), introduced in 2015. In the hands-on photos below, we show you the new bracelet mounted on the recently introduced “Deauville” version of the watch.The bracelet’s design is based on the one used on this vintage model from 1965, pictured below. According to Oris, the new stainless-steel metal bracelet (with a folding clasp, as seen below) should add approximately $300 to the retail price of the Diver Sixty-Five (CHF 1,950 versus CHF 1,750 on a strap). read more

“Real watches for real people” is the slogan of Oris and although I seldomly take these kind of lines very serious, this one does make sense actually. Real people, like you and me, who have to save-up for a nice watch, a real watch. Don’t be mislead by all the images of tourbillon watches or minute repeaters shown everywhere, they only represent a very small market. Oris showed us that they were able to move the watch industry, or more important, its consumers, with their €1700 Euro Sixty-Five divers watch. Where a lot of other brands were occupied last year with increasing prices and trying to justify these to their clients (retailers and consumers) during the SIHH and BaselWorld, the talk of the town was Oris with their Divers Sixty-Five timepiece. read more
