Zenith inked an agreement with Land Rover last year, with the first result of the tie-up the El Primero Range Rover Special Edition. Monochromatic and no-nonsense in style, the Range Rover edition is the first Zenith wristwatch with a ceramised aluminium case (recently joined by the new El Primero “Panda”).
Zenith introduced its El Primero in 1969, becoming one of the first watchmakers to unveil an automatic chronograph. Robust and economical, the El Primero survived the Quartz Crisis and is now regarded as one of the landmark chronograph movements.
In almost 50 years the El Primero has not changed significantly as a chronograph, until Baselworld 2017, when Zenith took the covers off the Defy El Primero 21, powered by the newly developed El Primero 9004 movement.
Like the Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 6006G featured yesterday, the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Full Open was another under the radar introduction at Baselworld 2017.
Not in the Zenith press kit or website, the El Primero Full Open is a skeleton dial version of the retro El Primero. And it’s available in both the largish 42mm case, as well as a 38mm size that feels almost like a vintage watch, being the same size as the original El Primero A386 of 1969.

Zenith is best known these days for chronograph watches powered by the high-frequency El Primero chronograph movement, which it introduced in the milestone horological year of 1969. However, one would have to go further back to discover that the brand also boasts a history of developing precision timekeeping instruments for aviation. In fact, French pilot Louis Blériot was wearing a Zenith when he crossed the English Channel in his aircraft, the Blériot XI, in July 1909. By 1939, the company’s Montre Aeronef Zenith Type 20 watch had become standard equipment on the dashboards of many French planes. It is timepieces such as these that inspired Zenith’s Pilot collection, which has become a major pillar for the brand since its launch back in 2012.
